Where Is Hamilton From? From America to Switzerland
Hamilton was founded in 1892 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and is made in Switzerland today as part of the Swatch Group. Is Hamilton American or Swiss? Read on.

Short answer: Today Hamilton is a Swiss brand: it is based in Biel/Bienne, its watches are made in Switzerland, and it belongs to the Swatch Group. But the brand was not born in Switzerland. It was born in America, founded in 1892 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where it made its watches for about 80 years.
So the answer to "is Hamilton American or Swiss?" is "both": born in America, living in Switzerland. Hamilton doesn't hide it either; it describes itself with the phrase "American spirit, Swiss precision." This story follows that journey.
1892: Lancaster, Pennsylvania
The Hamilton Watch Company was founded in Lancaster in 1892, taking over from the bankrupt Keystone Standard Watch Company. It was named after the 18th-century lawyer Andrew Hamilton. The first Hamilton watch, a 17-jewel pocket watch, came out in 1893.
Hamilton first became famous through the railroads. In late 19th-century America, trains ran in both directions on the same tracks, and a clock that was a few minutes off could cause a crash. Railroads required their engineers to carry highly accurate pocket watches, and Hamilton became one of the favourite makers of them, known by the slogan "The Watch of Railroad Accuracy."
The soldiers' watch
Hamilton made its first wristwatch in 1917, during the First World War, as wristwatches were starting to replace pocket watches. In the Second World War the company stopped civilian production entirely and worked for the military: more than a million watches were sent overseas. In this period Hamilton also built the Model 21 marine chronometer, used for navigation on U.S. Navy ships.
Today's Khaki collection carries on the legacy of those military watches.
1957: The world's first electric watch

After the war Hamilton bet on the future of watchmaking. In 1957 it introduced the world's first electric wristwatch, powered by a battery instead of a mainspring that needed winding. Its most famous case was the triangular Ventura. The watch Elvis Presley wore in the 1961 film Blue Hawaii was a Ventura too. We tell its story in Hamilton Ventura.
1969: Production moves to Switzerland
In the 1960s Swiss watches grew ever stronger in the American market, and Hamilton moved closer to the heart of watchmaking: in 1966 it bought the Büren Watch Company in Switzerland, and in 1969 it ended production in Lancaster and moved watchmaking to the Büren factory.
Its last big move in America came in 1970. On 6 May 1970, in New York, Hamilton unveiled the Pulsar, the world's first digital electronic wristwatch. Developed in Lancaster, it went on sale in 1972; the first model, in 18-carat gold, cost $2,100, which the Swatch Group's archive puts at the price of a family car.

Above is a Pulsar Time Computer from the mid-1970s. To see the time you pressed a button; only then did the red LED digits light up.
Who owns Hamilton?
In the 1970s the Hamilton watch brand was sold to SSIH, the Swiss group that also owned Omega and Tissot. (Sources give different years for the sale, between 1971 and 1974.) In the 1980s SSIH merged with another Swiss group, ASUAG, and the resulting company is known today as the Swatch Group.
So today Hamilton sits under the same roof as Omega, Tissot and Longines. It is based in Biel/Bienne, its watches are made in Switzerland, and their dials read "Swiss Made". We explain what that label means in Where is Tissot from?.
The old factory buildings in Lancaster are still standing. Even after production moved, the company's headquarters stayed there until 1980. Today the clock-towered buildings are homes, known as the "Hamilton Watch Complex"; the cover photo above shows them.
The movie watch
One of Hamilton's best-known traits is its link with cinema. Its watches have appeared in many films, including 2001: A Space Odyssey, Men in Black, Interstellar and Oppenheimer. For 2001: A Space Odyssey, Hamilton worked with Stanley Kubrick's team to design the film's watches of the future. The Hamilton Jazzmaster Regulator Cinema is a model inspired by that link.
