Seiko is a Japanese company that manufactures watches and optical instruments. It is a brand that combines Japanese perfectionism, success, and ambition with its timepieces, pioneering many innovations such as the world's first quartz watch (Quartz Astron, 1969) and the first GPS Solar watch, producing high-quality and technologically advanced timepieces. The name itself means "precise," "minute," or "success" in Japanese.
History
Seiko's history began in 1881 when a 21-year-old entrepreneur named Kintaro Hattori opened a shop in Tokyo's Ginza district that sold and repaired clocks and watches. In 1892, he established the Seikosha (meaning "House of Exquisite Workmanship") factory and started producing wall clocks. In 1913, Seiko produced Japan's first wristwatch, the "Laurel." The brand name SEIKO was first used on a wristwatch in 1924, following the Great Kanto Earthquake. The company changed the watchmaking industry forever in 1969 by releasing the world's first quartz wristwatch, the "Quartz Astron," and continues to lead in watch technologies (Spring Drive, Kinetic, GPS Solar).
